Thomsens Garden Center has new owners

Thomsens Garden Center in Collegeville, northwest of St. Joseph, now has new owners – Steph and Ryan Roder, who live in Buffalo.

Arno Shermock, the owner-operator of Thomsens for the past 15 years, recently sold the business to the Roders. Shermock said he intends to keep working at the greenhouse through the growing season, along with its new owners. Thomsens, which started in the late 1970s, has come to be the largest greenhouse under glass in central Minnesota and attracts customers from a large area.

Bob and Bonnie Thomsen were the founders and owners-operators of the greenhouse for its first decade or so, until they sold the business to Shermock.

During an interview with the Newsleader, the Roders said they decided to buy Thomsens because it’s a perennially successful garden center, adding they plan to keep the same “great” employee team and will offer the center’s

Last week gave investors an important peek into the state of the US consumer. Despite historically high inflation and rising interest rates, consumers still appear to be relatively strong, although they continue to be choosy with how they allocate their discretionary income.

PPI and Retail Sales Look Bright, But Consumer Debt is Mounting

Last week there were two economic indicators released featuring October statistics that were a positive sign for consumers. Producer Price Index came in at 8%, below the 8.3% expectation, and showing the fourth consecutive month of declines.

Retail sales also reported better than expected at 1.3%, vs. the 1.0% estimate. Strength was led by large ticket items such as motor vehicles which increased 1.3% and furniture which increased 1.1%.

Round Rock residents learn how to grow, donate food at Unity Park Community Garden

Cara Wellner started growing seasonal vegetables in Unity Park Community Garden nearly three years ago to teach her children healthy eating habits.

“I figure if they’re growing the food, they will be more apt to want to eat it,” Wellner said. “That has definitely been the case.”

In addition to learning about gardening and farming, Wellner said the garden presents an opportunity for her children, who are homeschooled, to get outside and give back to the community.

Besides providing rentable garden plots for those without the space at home, the community garden supplies fruits and vegetables to the Hope Alliance and Round Rock Area Serving Center.

On Thanksgiving, two bargain reatilers in Milwaukee County gave shoppers an early head start on this season’s Black Friday shopping.

MILWAUKEE – Two bargain stores in Milwaukee County gave shoppers a head start on Black Friday shopping.

People ready to burn off some Thanksgiving turkey and shop until they drop wrapped around the building to get into Hot Bargain Depot’s grand opening. The owner said Thursday was the perfect night.

“We are trying to give our customers the best price for Black Friday; Hot Bargain Depot is where Black Friday never ends,” said owner Muad Assad. “A lot of customers, they always look for the best deals, and that’s why we try to open today to show them what kind of deals we have.”

Country’s first botanical garden about to vanish


KARACHI:

The country’s first botanical garden, established more than a decade ago for research purposes and preservation of plants, at one of the largest universities in the country, is now in a state of ruin due to inattention and lack of funds.

Back in 2005, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), approved the addition of a botanical garden at the University of Karachi, spread over several acres, at a cost of Rs 30 million.

Two years later, in September of 2007, the project was inaugurated and its initial years were dedicated to preservation of alpine plants, medicinal plants, and halophytes; while a separate section was created for planting fruit bearing trees. Presently, the garden resembles a wild tree forest.

With inflation reaching a 40-year high, many families across the country might be looking to Black Friday deals to save a few dollars. That said, a recent report from WalletHub.compared 4,000 deals from 16 of the biggest retailers in the country across nine categories to determine what stores have the best deals this year.

The nine product categories included apparel and accessories, electronics, appliances, jewelry, toys, computers and phones, packed goods, furniture and all other good categories. 

An overall review was measured for all nine categories and then a top five category for each individual nine. This report will highlight the top ten overall and the top three in each category to help readers with a possible starting base to achieve maximum saving this holiday season. 

Overall, JCPenny came in as No. 1 across all nine categories, followed by Belk at No. 2, then Macy’s, Office Depot and OfficeMax,
