12 hot gardening trends of 2024: From front-yard re-do’s to ‘rainscaping’

Gardening and the products that go with it might be noticeably more expensive, but prices don’t seem to be turning people away from America’s No. 1 outdoor activity.

The National Gardening Association’s 2023 National Gardening Survey found an estimated 80 percent of American households are taking part in some sort of lawn or gardening activity – a five-year high.

About one-third of gardeners say they’re spending more to keep pace with higher prices, while others say they’re coping by trimming back on discretionary costs, especially in the areas of flower gardening and lawn care.

Houseplant growing checks in as the type of gardening showing the biggest growth, NGA’s survey found.

Barany in the Garden: Santa is a gardener | Home And Garden

Dear Editor:

I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in ‘The Sun’ it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon

“Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” is an iconic line from an editorial by Francis Church. Written in response to Virginia’s letter, it was first published in The Sun in New York on Sept. 21, 1897. The most reprinted editorial in the English language, Church’s letter to Virginia has been translated into 20 languages.

This Christmas Eve, I’m asking my readers to trust me. If you read it in my column, it must be so … right?

I’m letting you in on a big secret. Santa is a gardener and he lives in North Pole, Alaska.

I interviewed him for this story.

Gardening: Keep the birds well fed and watered this winter

The bird feeder outside my office window has been busy the past few weeks.

We put out straight black oil sunflower seeds and these tasty treats draw in regulars such as gold and house finches, nuthatches, juncos, pine siskins and chickadees along with the occasional enterprising flicker. The chickadees, siskins and nuthatches will pick through the seeds to find just the right one and then fly off to a gnarly barked maple tree to crack open the seed.

For birds to do well at your house, they need a consistent food supply, trees and shrubs close by for shelter, a place to hide from hawks and a clean water supply. Different birds favor different kinds of seed. As mentioned above, chickadees, siskins and nuthatches love the larger sunflower seeds. Birds can tell which seeds have the most nutritional value – probably by their weight – and will pick through multiple

GARDENING: Under the mistletoe – Odessa American

By Sara Moran, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Horticulture Agent for Midland and Ector Counties

I was listening to Taylor Swift’s song (Christmas Tree Farm) where mistletoe is mentioned in a romantic scenario as you might have seen mistletoe on many season decorations or Hallmark movies (come on! Don’t tell me you never watch a Holiday Hallmark movie!). But mistletoe is as romantic as we know it? Well, keep reading!

Mistletoe is characterized by its green leaves and small, white berries. You can find mistletoe in many parts of the world, and — are you ready for this? — mistletoe is a parasitic plant that grows on various trees, extracting nutrients from its host.

There are different species of mistletoe. The American mistletoe — called oak mistletoe — occurs throughout the United States and affects deciduous trees. Tree species affected include oak, sugarberry, cherry, sycamore, elm, and more. While American mistletoe
