Why native NC plants can be good for your garden and the coast

Baptisia, commonly known as blue wild indigo, are architectural gems in the garden.

One day it’s 72 degrees during the day, and 35 degrees at night. The next day, it’s a high of 40 degrees and lows well below freezing for days on end, before returning to the 70s for good measure.

Welcome to winter in coastal North Carolina.

Summer can be just as schizophrenic, with a months-long drought headlined by temperatures reaching triple digits ended by a tropical storm that dumps a foot of rain over three days … followed by another long drought.

For those coastal residents looking to test their green thumb, the region’s weather can make landscaping a challenge − never mind trying to grow something in our sandy soil. And with so many people moving to North Carolina from other parts of the country, what plants they grew up with in, say, Connecticut, might not be the right ones for success in a backyard along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Dangerous SC tire dump redeveloped into cargo gateway by family business | Business

MONCKS CORNER — A hazardous industrial site where more than a million tires were left to rot next to residential neighborhoods is now handling cargo shipments for international manufacturers.

Jet Park Warehousing this week showed off its revitalization of the old Viva Recycling property on Old Depot Road — a three-year, $7 million project that now includes enclosed storage space and a new logistics center as well as offices for roughly 75 employees.

The Erie, Pa.-based, family-run company bought the old tire recycling site at a Berkeley County courthouse auction and has transformed what once was a nuisance for residents and law enforcement into a modern hub for moving cargo to and from the Port of Charleston.

Lax rules left mountains of mosquito-infested, flammable tires in South Carolina

Its metamorphosis wasn’t always a sure bet.

“It was a disaster,” Jet Park co-owner Bryan Barnhart said, recalling his first tour of the site in 2020.

The old Viva Recycling building had

When purchasing bulbs, don’t grab from bottom of barrel

Q. For many years I bought narcissus bulbs at local nurseries, put them in a bulb vase filled with water and watched them grow. Some years I would do 10 or more as gifts. Now they don’t grow — they just sit there with bottoms touching the water and do nothing. I’ve tried the last three years (and bought bulbs from different nurseries) and now I’m curious as to what has changed. So far nothing, so now I’m really going to give up. — Julie Brock, Virginia Beach

A. I assume you are referring to the paperwhite, Narcissus papyraceus, a species of perennial bulb native to the Mediterranean. It is the easiest bulb to force and is thus popular to grow indoors in winter, particularly during the holidays.

Bulbs often need chilling — “vernalization” — before they are forced, with eight to 15 weeks at 35 to 45 degrees

January is planning time for starting seedlings indoors

Start vegetable seeds inside to get a jump on the growing season.

Start vegetable seeds inside to get a jump on the growing season.

For many vegetable gardeners, this is perhaps the best season of the year—seed catalog season! Since the first week of January, colorful seed catalogs have begun to appear in my mailbox just as links to online seed catalogs have appeared in my email inbox.

For a vegetable gardener in Greater Columbus, nothing provides more satisfaction on a cold snowy or rainy day in January than perusing colorful seed catalogs and dreaming about growing your best vegetable garden ever just a few short months from now.

Gardening:Pruning trees now can help prevent oak wilt

Many vegetable gardeners get a jump on the growing season by starting their own seeds indoors, and January is the time to begin making plans for ordering seeds and other needed supplies.

Elon Musk’s Twitter era feels like an absolute fever dream, especially now that an auction of the San Francisco office’s furniture has completed. Items across the board went for thousands of dollars, with a statue of Twitter’s iconic logo selling for $100,000.

The auction, hosted by Heritage Global Partners, began last month as the company, under Musks’s tutelage, tried to trim the fat of a seemingly sinking ship by selling furniture and laying off thousands of employees. Starting bids for various office furniture like magnetic dry erase boards, high-top tables, and wooden chairs were in the ballpark of $25 to $50. After the auction finished, the listed furniture wound up selling for thousands of dollars.

To the people that spend a month’s rent on an office chair—whether it’s because you’re a musk

Home Depot repairs Oklahoma vet’s burned down garage for free

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) – An Oklahoma Army veteran used his garage as a workshop, building thousands of dollars worth of furniture for fellow veterans and programs to help with PTSD.

But when his garage burned down, his good deeds came to a halt.

On Tuesday, however, came another good deed – this one from a team of volunteers from Home Depot, who went to his Edmond home to rebuild his garage for free.

“I had a fire, a piece of my equipment shorted, and it started a garage fire and basically lost my garage,” Army Veteran William Wilson said.

Video at the top of this story shows the culprit – a large piece of machinery that Wilson used for woodworking.

Wilson has used his skills over the years to build $15,000 worth of furniture to benefit veterans programs with “Warriors for Freedom.”

Wilson showed off a garage bar that a

Gardening Show returns to Porter County

Although winter is still here, gardening fans will want to look ahead and plan for the upcoming growing season in the Region.

And they can do so at the 17th annual Gardening Show on Jan. 21 at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso.

“We are so excited to have the show again,” said LuAnn Troxel, publicity chairwoman of the show. “We missed two years,” she said, referring to the halt of the event due to the pandemic.

Troxel said there will be many features and activities to engage the public at the event. Everything from plant and gardening supply sales to presentations, demos and a seed exchange will be in the spotlight. There are more than 120 vendors participating in the show.

“It’s not a lot different from previous shows,” she said adding they’ve listened to feedback from past show attendees about what they loved seeing at the event.
