Shoppers pull back on ‘big ticket’ items as furniture, appliance sales lag [Video]

This earnings season shows a major challenge facing retailers: shoppers reluctant to make big purchases.

To some extent, this pullback is to be expected as interest rates stay high, the housing market has stalled, and consumers are gravitating towards services rather than goods.

But retailers reporting results over the past several weeks have shown how even with an anticipated shift in consumer habits the impacts on results today are hard to ignore.

“After three years of unprecedented demand in the home improvement market, we continue to see softer engagement in big ticket discretionary categories like patio and appliances that likely reflects both pull forward of these single item purchases and deferral,” Billy Bastek, Home Depot’s (HD) EVP of merchandising, said during the company’s second quarter earnings call.

The home improvement retailer said big ticket transactions above $1000 were down 5.5% year over year.

Elon Musk’s Twitter era feels like an absolute fever dream, especially now that an auction of the San Francisco office’s furniture has completed. Items across the board went for thousands of dollars, with a statue of Twitter’s iconic logo selling for $100,000.

The auction, hosted by Heritage Global Partners, began last month as the company, under Musks’s tutelage, tried to trim the fat of a seemingly sinking ship by selling furniture and laying off thousands of employees. Starting bids for various office furniture like magnetic dry erase boards, high-top tables, and wooden chairs were in the ballpark of $25 to $50. After the auction finished, the listed furniture wound up selling for thousands of dollars.

Faller’s Furniture continues to evolve through 175 years in business | News

CLARION – Perhaps one of the secrets to staying in business for 175 years, as Faller’s Furniture and Design in Clarion has done, is adaptability. After all, that business has gone through its share of changes since beginning operations in 1847.

“Fallers started in Fryburg with my great-grandfather building wagons and coffins and making furniture. It evolved into a furniture, funeral home business,” noted Greg Faller, the fourth generation of the Faller family to own the business. “The biggest change in my time was streamlining the business down to just furniture, we also still do custom drapery. When I was growing up we were selling small TVs and pianos, selling appliances, paint, cutting glass. Selling wallpaper was huge back in the day.”
