North Austin plant store Garden Seventeen to close June 30; relocation pending

North Central Austin plant store Garden Seventeen announced it will be officially closing doors June 30.

The store, located at 604 Williams St., Austin, has been providing Austinites with a wide selection of plants, gardening supplies and other goods for green thumbs since June 2020.

Co-owner Rodney Stoutenger said Garden Seventeen is closing due to several unexpected financial setbacks.

“Its felt like an uphill battle,” Stoutenger said.

Eight months into opening, Winter Storm Uri froze over dozens of plants at Garden Seventeen, leading to an over $100,000 loss in inventory. Then earlier this year, Garden Seventeen suffered a series of six break-ins, costing the store $65,000, Stoutenger said.

Historic storms and break-ins aside, Stoutenger said rising rent costs have priced Garden Seventeen out. The store’s rent was raised four times in the past three years, he said, most recently to about $30,000 a month.

Woman who fed starving neighbors shares heartbreaking video after vandals poison her garden with salt: ‘You won’t stop me’

A woman who uses her land to grow food for families struggling with the U.K.’s cost of living crisis was devastated after discovering that her garden was destroyed by salt.

Carly Burd (@carlyburd43 on TikTok) is based in Harlow, Essex, and has been growing fruits and vegetables on her plot of land as a part of her “A Meal on Me With Love” initiative to help put food on the tables of families in need.

This was until someone vandalized her land and crops with salt.

In a video that has garnered over two million views at the time of writing, a tearful Burd shows the freshly-tilled soil polluted with white specs of salt.

“I’m absolutely heartbroken,” she says.

Now he is letting nature take its course by creating an area of hemp ropes where seaweed and shellfish can naturally seed, creating a secret sea garden to supply his busy kitchens.
