East Pearl Street businesses changed with the times

More than a century ago, the east end of Pearl Street had everything we aspire to in a community. A vibrant and diverse part of town, the blocks east of 15th were ‘mixed use’ with residences amidst locally owned business, convenient transit and even shops for recycled materials.

Working families found the necessities for daily life on the east end: dry goods, work clothes, furniture, ice, coal for heating and fuel, mechanical parts, farm supplies, as well as a family grocer, a barbershop, the post office, and public schools.

Boulder Feed Mill, at 2027 Pearl, sold flour, grain, hay and coal. Livery stables for feeding and boarding horses also populated the east Pearl blocks. Stagecoaches made regular trips from one of the liveries to mountain mining towns.

The Denver & Boulder Valley Railroad depot was located on Pearl Street between 22nd and 23rd streets, from the 1870s

Guide to Tulsa-area gardening events, floral displays and more to celebrate spring

Correction: A previous version of this story had the incorrect date for the Jenks Herb and Plant Festival. This year’s event is Saturday, April 22.

Despite colder-than-usual weather in northeastern Oklahoma this time of year, small signs of spring, like yellow daffodils and pink Ann magnolia trees, are starting to bloom across Tulsa.

If you want to experience spring in full swing, however, look no further than Tulsa Botanic Garden, 3900 Tulsa Botanic Drive.

Starting now through mid-April, guests at the Garden will be blown away by the massive number of flowers on display for the annual Tulsa Botanic Blooms celebration.

With over 200,000 blooms of several flower species, Tulsa Botanic Garden’s massive display will last for about four to six weeks. To help optimize the display time, horticulturists at the Garden selected a variety of flowers — hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, dwarf irises and, of course, tulips — that reach

Monroe County garden center gearing up for planting season

Depending on what you’re looking for, prices could be a couple of bucks more than what you paid last year because of supply issues.

BRODHEADSVILLE, Pa. — Fruit trees and shrubs are scattered across the property at Chestnut Hill Nursery in Chestnuthill Township near Broheadsville, displaying some of the plants you can expect this year.

The garden center along Route 209 is getting ready for what the owners expect to be another busy season.

“We’re really starting to bring all the material in. We’ve already contracted with our growers for the material we think we need for the season, and the trucks are rolling in, basically, every day at this point,””said owner Jim Scocozza.

Scocozza says the garden industry boomed during the coronavirus pandemic, and now with high food prices, he believes more people will be interested in growing some of their own.

“Gardens are going to be really

Spring has arrived. Here’s when to plant food and flowers in the garden.

Spring is here, which means farm workers at the Haley House Thornton Street Urban Farm and Community Gardens are looking at seeds.

“It is the first day of spring, and we are plotting and planning what we’re going to be growing this season,” said Jay Vilar, program director at the Haley House. “A lot of the work that we’re doing now is about just getting ready for the season. So we’re doing a lot of our seed ordering. We’re doing our starts at the Dudley Greenhouse and we’re starting to get our deliveries of soil and compost ready to go.”

Haley House uses its Roxbury farm to provide both food and education, Vilar said. The nonprofit runs a cafe, soup kitchen and other initiatives that connect food and community. The three-quarter acre farm grows fresh produce and allows students and neighbors to tend to the soil.
