Bed Bath & Beyond to cut jobs, close stores amid weak Q2 results

New Jersey, Sept. 1, (dpa/GNA) - Facing weak quarterly results, US home improvement retailer Bed Bath & Beyond Inc plans to introduce cost-cutting measures. 

The struggling firm announced on Wednesday various measures to meet demand, drive growth and profitability, and improve its balance sheet and cash flows. 

These include 20% job reduction plans and plan to exit a third of its Owned Brands, and to close 150 lower-producing banner stores. 

The company also sees weak comparable sales in the second quarter and fiscal 2022. 

In pre-market activity on the Nasdaq, the shares were losing around 24% to trade at $9.23. 

For the second quarter, the company now expects net sales of approximately $1.45 billion and comparable sales decline of approximately 26%. 

Further, for fiscal 2022, the company now expects comparable sales decline in the 20% range.

The event, which was organised to celebrate two new renovations at the business in Desmond Business Park, saw the Liam MacCarthy Cup brought to the sounds of cheers on a splendid sunny Saturday afternoon.

Mike Kelly, of Tadhg O’Connor Hardware, said there was a great turnout in what was a wonderful opportunity to give back to the local community in Newcastle West.

“We are very lucky to have Declan with the Liam MacCarthy here as we have great local support as always,” he told Limerick Live.

Midlands store closures at their lowest rate since 2018

Net store closures in the Midlands are at their lowest rate since 2018, according to new data from PwC and the Local Data Company.

In the first half of the year, 266 shops opened across the West Midlands, compared to 516 closures, creating a net decline of 250, down from 566 in H1 2021. The East Midlands saw 223 openings, with 359 closures, creating a net closure of 136.

With the overall reduction at -1.4%, the West Midlands closure rate has improved and is in line with other regions in the UK, with the spread of closures across Great Britain at its lowest for over seven years.

A boost for leisure

One segment that has seen an improvement has been leisure, with operators making up three of the four fastest growing categories in GB.
