Lidl expands outdoor Garden Centers to 76 U.S. stores

Discount grocer Lidl said it is expanding its outdoor Garden Center concept to 76 stores in nine states in the coming weeks.

The Germany-based retailer piloted the Garden Centers, which feature a variety of flowers, plants, soil, hanging baskets, planters, and other gardening accessories, at a store on Long Island, N.Y., in 2022, in partnership with local plant grower Gabrielsen Farms. Last year, the retailer expanded the department to additional locations in New York.

Lidl said the garden centers will launch in three phases in select stores:

  • March 27 – May 14: Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina
  • April 10 – May 14: Virginia and Maryland
  • April 24 – May 28: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York

In addition to Jamesport, N.Y.-based Gabrielsen Farms, a family-owned company that traces its history back to the 1800s, Lidl is

If a soil test calls for it, apply lime to your garden in November

The long-term weather forecast is calling for a continuing string of nice days through Thanksgiving Day. Many gardeners will be able to catch up on garden projects that they may have been putting off. One of these projects that often gets overlooked is liming the garden soil.

If you have been fertilizing your garden regularly with conventional fertilizers for several years in a row, chances are your soil may need lime. November is an ideal time to apply lime.

Lime is a calcium-based soil amendment that farmers and gardeners use to raise the soil pH. Older farmers used to refer to it as “sweetening the soil.”

It’s not a good idea to just guess if your soil pH is low, soil should be tested.

To test for pH only, you can do it yourself with a pH test kit from a garden center. These kits are fairly accurate. Just make

Guilford Garden Center celebrates 60 years, changes hands

GREENSBORO — Amid all the holiday decorations they’ve got in their store, the new owners of Guilford Garden Center are keyed up for spring.

Last week, Elliott and Stephanie Jones took over Guilford Garden Center on Milner Drive near Guilford College in Greensboro after buying it from the most recent prior owner, Christina Larson. The business, started in 1963, is celebrating its 60th anniversary year.

Even in November, the garden supply store is surrounded by a lush landscape of plants for sale. And over all of that are the sounds of fountains trickling and hoses spraying, as staff members work to keep the greenery watered.

Inside is the kind of eclectic space where a customer could consider purchasing a statue of a cat licking its paw, only to turn around and find one of the three felines who live at the center doing just that.

Garden supply prices up about 15%, cost of fertilizer triples

If you’re thinking about warm weather and planning your landscaping, experts say your garden might cost more this spring.

Lawn care experts say the good news is that a lot of people have picked up home gardening as a hobby, especially during and after the COVID pandemic, but the costs of things like flowers and seeds are high.

“Flowers have increased from the prices of the nursery,” said Justin Kolvenbach, Villani Landshapers in Menomonee Falls.

Spring is looking expensive.

“I mean, look at the grocery prices,” said Kolvenbach.

Prices are up for landscaping supplies.

“Whether it’s the fertilizer that we use, it could be the shrub that we get from a nursery, prices have gone up, just like everywhere,”
