Pa. jail guard who missed killer’s escape is fired, as hunt for fugitive focuses on botanic garden

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — A prison tower guard has been fired after letting a murderer slip away on his watch in a brazen daytime escape, officials said Friday, as the nine-day-old search pressed on amid southeastern Philadelphia suburbs, farmland and a vast botanical garden.

News of the firing came as the searchers’ ranks grew overnight, focusing on the area around Longwood Gardens, where the fugitive inmate has been spotted before.

Danelo Souza Cavalcante, 34, escaped while awaiting transfer to state prison on Aug. 31 after being sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in 2021. Prosecutors say he wanted to stop her from telling police that he’s wanted over a killing in his home country of Brazil.

Authorities have described Cavalcante as extremely dangerous. With the search in its second week, nervous residents remain alert for any sign of him. Police believe Cavalcante has been spotted

KYIV, Dec 26 (Reuters) – In the lush greenhouses of Kyiv’s National Botanical Garden, staff are struggling to save a decades-old collection of tropical plants after months of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid led to electricity outages, threatening the garden’s heating supply.

“These collections cannot be restored. This is not a greenhouse with cucumbers and tomatoes… The loss of this collection would be a great national loss for Ukraine,” said Lyudmyla Buiun, responsible for tropical and subtropical plants.

“Plants cannot be told… ‘please endure, because today it is -15 degrees (Celsius).’ It is impossible,” she said, pointing out signs of cold damage on some plants.

Country’s first botanical garden about to vanish

KARACHI:

The country’s first botanical garden, established more than a decade ago for research purposes and preservation of plants, at one of the largest universities in the country, is now in a state of ruin due to inattention and lack of funds.

Back in 2005, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), approved the addition of a botanical garden at the University of Karachi, spread over several acres, at a cost of Rs 30 million.

Two years later, in September of 2007, the project was inaugurated and its initial years were dedicated to preservation of alpine plants, medicinal plants, and halophytes; while a separate section was created for planting fruit bearing trees. Presently, the garden resembles a wild tree forest.

The Express Tribune asked the in-charge, Dr Roohi Bano, about the miserable state of the garden, to which she replied that she had only recently assumed her post but was aware of
