Pacific High’s garden program then-and-now. The addition of an 1,100 square foot greenhouse (funded in partnership with the Sitka Tribe and a Community Foods Program grant) has propelled the garden into a full-fledged Farm-to-Table program, supplying fresh food to the school’s kitchen, and teaching real-world skills and work ethics to students. What began as a tiny garden bed on the front lawn, has blossomed into a full-fledged Farm-to-Table program for Sitka’s alternative high school.

Pacific High in Sitka this year opened an 1,100-square foot  greenhouse on school grounds, supplemented by an extensive outdoor garden.

Principal Mandy Summer outlined the program for the Sitka School Board on Wednesday (12-6-23). She said that it’s not just about growing plants.

Move over Amazon.com, Home Depot is the new belle of the ball for industrial developers.

The Atlanta-based chain, among other home improvement and construction retailers, is absorbing millions of square feet of warehouse space, as it moves to adjust its supply chain and have more goods in storage. And the company has become an attractive tenant for industrial developers, including Prologis, Duke Realty and Clarion Partners.

In Los Angeles and the Inland Empire alone, Home Depot has signed more than 4.5 million square feet worth of industrial leases so far this year, according to public property records reviewed by TRD.

“It speaks to more consumption, more need for floor space and a supply chain issue,” said CBRE’s Daniel de la Paz. “That extra inventory and getting

HEB homes in on growth with new decor departments

Inside the sprawling HEB plus! store at US 281 and Evans Road, customers browse colorful throw pillows, rugs, vases, frames, chairs, ottomans, doormats and bundles of dried lavender.

Mirrors and wall hangings are displayed near table linens, lamps and plant holders below a sign that reads: “Welcome to your happy place.”

The new department, dubbed Home by HEB, is one of the San Antonio-based grocer’s latest moves to grow its business. While adding store locations — which it’s doing as it pushes into the Dallas-Fort Worth area — is a key avenue to growth, in mature markets like San Antonio, growth can require something new.

“Integrating higher-margin categories like home into the mix allows HEB to plump up profits without stepping too far out” of its geographic footprint, said Carol Spieckerman, president of retail advisory firm Spieckerman Retail, based in Bentonville, Ark. “Retailers like Walmart and Target use grocery

The Home Depot wants to raze a popular movie theater and a dozen businesses in Granada Hills to build a big-box store full of tools and lumber. The neighbors aren’t happy.

The Atlanta-based home improvement chain has filed plans to construct a 108,000-square-foot store and a 28,000-square-foot garden center in the North Hills Shopping Center at 16830 Devonshire Street, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

It would require demolishing a Regency Theaters and 12 businesses, including a bank, a Baja Fresh and a O.Tofu House & Pankko Tonkatsu restaurant.

The 9-acre shopping center includes an existing 95,600-square-foot commercial center, a 40,000-square-foot, 2,400-seat movie theater and a surface parking lot.

An affiliate of Home Depot bought the Regency Theaters building at Devonshire and Balboa Boulevard last October for $37 million.

Home Depot vs. Lowe’s: Battle Of The Home Improvement Chains

Winner of the boxing fight

aluxum

This article was coproduced with Mark Roussin.

Not long ago, the housing market was once the darling of the US economy. It was an unstoppable force, with sellers making money hand-over-fist in ever-rising amounts.

Now things are beginning to soften – though notice I didn’t say “decline” or “weaken.” Only “soften.”

That might sound surprising considering our current situation, with red-hot inflation, weakening job stats, and what looks like an oncoming recession. And indeed, buyers are becoming more hesitant to sign on the dotted line.

Those who do have been canceling them at the highest rate since early 2020. In the month of June alone, 15% of all homes that went under contract were apparently canceled.

Homebuyers are canceling deals at the highest rate

As for supply, it has been historically low – part of the reason prices have been so high. And while we were seeing a consistent uptick in supply for a bit there…

According to Leland planning director Ben Andrea, building permits have also been submitted and are pending approval now. A public service department review is the final hurdle before construction would be able to begin.

“Then, once the building permit fee is invoiced and paid by the applicant, the building permit will be issued,” Andrea said.
