Perino's Home & Garden Center

Our grandfather, Salvador “Sam” Perino, established Perino’s Nursery in 1949, after proudly serving as a Naval Aviator in WWII.

After the war, Sam and his loving wife Magdalene Perino started a 24-hour grocery and produce market in New Orleans on the corner of Carrollton and Claiborne. The market sold cut flowers for special occasions and served sliced watermelon during the summer months. He eventually introduced camellias and azaleas into the mix, which led to the launch of Perino’s Nursery. In 1955, Sam took a leap of faith and moved his business to Veterans Memorial Blvd, which at the time was just a dirt road.

Perino's Home & Garden Center

Perino’s became a multi-generational business when his two sons (Buddy and Peter Perino) joined the business in the late 1970’s. Buddy and Peter helped expand Perino’s Garden Center into a full retail, growing, and landscape operation with a focus on cultivating quality local plants. In 2004, Buddy and Peter decided to discontinue the landscape department of the business in order to focus more attention on growing our own seasonal annuals, or “color”. Our focus on healthy, locally grown plants has differentiated us from the competition, resulting in continuous year over year sales growth. With over 350,000 square feet of heated greenhouses and 15 acres of outdoor growing space (located in Covington, LA), Perino’s greenhouses now supply over 70% of the plant material sold at the retail location, and 100% of our annual color!

Between 2011 – 2019, all of Peter and Buddy’s daughters joined the business to continue our grandfather’s legacy. Our third generation of Perino women have each brought our own unique skills and expertise to Perino’s to continue to grow the operation and expand into new territory. While once an afterthought, the newly renovated gift shop has now been transformed into a beautiful home and gift store, selling a large variety of goods which include baby clothes, women’s clothing, outdoor and indoor furniture, tableware, artwork, candles, and more. Additionally, we have worked to leverage more technology in the business to not only improve Perino’s social media presence but also launch a full-fledged webshop. The webshop enables both north and south shore customers to shop for their plants online and offers both in-store pickup and delivery. As the plants sold online ship directly from our greenhouses, our webshop also allows our northshore customers to have plants delivered to their homes at a discounted delivery rate (as compared to deliveries scheduled in-store). We have also implemented new ideas to try and expand our customer base, such as offering “$10 Tuesdays” where we run deep discounts on select plants each Tuesday during the summer months. Further, we created a customer loyalty program which allows customers to sign up with just a name and phone number to receive $5 off for every cumulative $150 spent.

We are continually looking for new ways to improve the business, both for our customers as well as our employees. We strive to treat our employees like family, and to provide a safe and enjoyable work environment, which results in having many long time employees with extensive knowledge. The Perino family is passionate about what we

do and very much appreciate our amazing team, which we think translates to an overall more enjoyable shopping experience for our customers.

We are thankful everyday that we have the opportunity to continue to grow the family business while working somewhere we love. The Perino family is honored to have almost 75 years of customer loyalty, and looks forward to 75 more!
